Character Name: Barbara Gordon
Sex: Female
Age: 22
Occupation: Small time journalist
Allegiance: The Good Cops of Gotham, and Justice.
Physical Description: Barbara’s first and foremost known quality is her red hair which tends to attract undue attention. She was always complimented on it growing up and could never escape its luminance into college. When a friend’s hair dye went horrible wrong, Barbara decided not to take her hair for granted and now embraces it. She keeps it long, between her shoulder blades and lower back, or sometimes to her shoulders if she’s sufficiently aggravated with it. As most redheads are, she is pale and sports a light color of blue in her eyes. Leaning on the taller side, she uses her height as an advantage when walking the streets of Gotham.
Batgirl: Creativity has never been much of her strong point, since the costume itself is virtually a copy of Batman’s. She sports smaller ears on the top since she sees no use for them other than esthetics, and is completely sucked into a skin-tight black costume. The symbol on Batman’s chest she did not copy, and remains still entirely anonymous under a black mask over her nose and eyes. In the back, however, she has recently let her hair lose for the sweat and itching was becoming unbearable. Without sufficient funds, she lacks the flashy objects that propel her male idol into the air or save him from flying bullets. She has, only at the moment, a belt that carries a flare gun, hand cuffs and a thin metal wire for emergencies.
Personality: Between a child of Gotham and of James Gordon, Barbara is anything but shy or weak. She isn’t afraid to speak her mind and knows she has the muscle to defend herself in case someone didn’t agree. She was raised to embrace her intelligence and work to be strong, which she took with her to college and let these qualities take steam. Like her father, she has a devout and stubborn sense of morals that won’t budge for anything. This stubbornness has sunk into her everyday personality, causing a few arguments here and there about Gotham or other topics close to her heart. Barbara remains thick skinned as she’s afraid to let anyone break this image of her.
Batgirl: Quick and fast, Batgirl prefers to move in and out of a situation as fast as possible. As she has only appeared a few times in Gotham itself, she hasn’t been able to establish much of who she is. Only smiling when things go right (and deathly silent and pale when wrong), she slips away into the night to remain as unknown to the world as possible.
History: Named Aurora, she quickly took a disliking to anything about her that made her stand out and wanted to go by her middle name, Barbara. As a child, she preferred to hide amongst the children of school in an irrational fear of the world. But in James’ line of work, it didn’t do well for their daughter to be shy and afraid. When her parents decided to enroll her in children’s karate, she finally began to start making friends, speaking up and seemingly gaining confidence in herself.
By high school, she was sticking out of the crowds by speaking out against organized crime in the classrooms and defending the good cops of Gotham, like her father. She had few friends as she was seen as a hazard, and even those that stuck around warned her to be careful who she spoke about in public. Her stubborn actions were a blend of outspokenness and a desire to find a fight; she had, unfortunately for some, become rather good in the martial arts and enjoyed the cheap thrill of throwing a punch or kicking someone to the ground. This rough behavior forced her to college outside of the city, to a safer place where she could relax and learn in peace.
Or so her parents thought. It was in college her voice became louder and her desire to fight corruption grew stronger. Barbara began to colligate career in Criminal Justice, much to the dismay of her father. She spent three years in the department before moving heavily into the science wing of Criminal Justice. Her studying took off well, earning high grades and wielding much admiration of her professors. She minored in journalism, a fall back job in case she didn’t get a better – until Batman, of course. She worked in the college’s newspaper and quickly became fascinated with the story of ‘The Batman’. She began researching into the appearances of the the Bat, though her major department laughed. They called him a vigilante with as many psychotic issues as those he was fighting. In defiance, she wrote her senior paper on Batman entitled: “Batman: Why Gotham needs him and the Police fear him.”
When Barbara called her mother to tell her she might enter the Master’s program, she heard a horrific story detailing her siblings’ kidnapping and near death experience. She immediately packed up and moved back home to Gotham, where she is now regretting not having found an apartment first.
Batgirl: Not too long after Batman’s appearance, there were numerous sightings of him on Barbara’s campus that her newspaper attempted to debunk. After a photo was caught of “Batman” the night before when Gotham’s paper wrote spotting him in the same night, it was declared that a fake was roaming campus. This only sparked more interest and left Batgirl to hide further from the public, as her nighttime roof stalkings were only practice. The last picture taken of her on campus was while she was jumping and the moonlight hit her body perfectly; the newspaper declared her “Batgirl!” (a fact she hated at the time, wondering why it hadn’t been ‘woman’) and she was never seen on campus again. A few weeks ago, however, she was spotted and, again, mistaken for Batman; this time, in Gotham.
Other: Well trained in the martial arts, Barbara and Batgirl can certainly defend themselves against an unarmed opponent (assuming they’re not Mr. Universe or a martial arts expert).
Strengths: Crime scene analyzing, computer hacking (taught by fellow computer nerds at school), strong memory
Weaknesses: Developes crushes much too easily, food, slight fear of heights
Likes: Chinese cuisine, dogs, practicing/refining martial arts, foreign films, libraries
Dislikes: Gangs, the country, being awake before 7, blizzards / extreme cold
